Abstract
Chemical synthesis of septanoses from the reducing sugars; by the ring
expansion of uloses; by the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of inositols, a
nd by the Baer-Fischer reaction of sugar dialdehydes are reviewed. Als
o, the role of seven membered ring sugars as intermediate compounds as
well as conformation of the septanose ring are discussed.
