In case of strongly first-order phase transitions, in which large disp
lacements of the molecules are involved, the lifetime of the fluoresce
nce excited by a pico-second laser was found to decrease sharply on ap
proaching the transition temperature T-0. The lifetime shortening is a
ttributed to the fluctuation increase towards the stability Limits of
the low temperature phase.
