The early signs of diagenesis in aragonitic coral skeletons have been
studied by the analysis of soluble organic matrices associated with sk
eletal structures of Acropora from recent to Pleistocene reefs of Muru
roa (French Polynesia). Transformations are evidenced in the fossil, t
hrough the quantitative decrease of the organic matrix and changes in
the composition of both proteic and glucidic components. Primary featu
res still preserved in acidic proteins (molecular weight and charges)
probably take part in maintaining mineralogical characteristics.
