The structures of bridged calix[6]arenes 1a and 1b were investigated.
Whereas 1a was found to take a structure where the bridging unit lies
below the calix[6]arene macroring with a cone conformation, its tetram
ethyl ether 1b adopts the 1,2,3-alternate conformation with the centra
l bromide functionality pointing into the cavity, as revealed by X-ray
crystallographic analysis. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
