Adsorbed water facilitates sulfidation of oxidic molybdate/alumina cat
alysts. The mode of binding and the role of water in the catalyst has
been investigated by an inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of th
e librational modes of the bound water. Water is adsorbed associativel
y at molybdenum centres in calcined molybdate/alumina. The role of the
adsorbed water in aiding sulfidation is discussed.
