The fluorescence properties of Sm3+-doped LaOCl, GdOCl, YOGl, (La, Gd)
OCl, (La, Y)OCl and (Gd, Y)OCl powder phophors are reported. The measu
red photoluminescence spectra have been analysed by determining their
colour coordinates ((X) over bar, (Y) over bar), the relative fluoresc
ence intensity ratios (red/orange) and their stimulated emission cross
sections (sigma(P)(E)). These Sm3+-phosphors have displayed bright re
ddish-orange colour due to the transitions (4)G(5/2)-->H-6(9/2) (red)
and (4)G(5/2)-->H-6(7/2) (orange) under a UV source (150 W xenon are l
amp). The LaOCl phosphor could be suggested as a promising material fo
r the reddish-orange colour emission for its use on the screens of opt
ical electronic systems.
