The general theory of electron-photon coincidence experiments for elec
tron impact ionization plus simultaneous excitation is developed. Orie
ntation and alignment parameters are defined and related to the angula
r distribution and polarization of the light emitted by the residual i
on. As a first guide to experimentalists in this field, we present res
ults for ionization of helium atoms, as calculated within a combined D
WBA + R-matrix method.
