Optical waveguides have been fabricated in Cr3(+):Gd3Ga5O12 by the met
hod of He4+ ion implantation at energies of around 2.8 MeV. Preliminar
y results indicate losses of the order of 3 dB cm(-1) with little or n
o effect on the absorption, emission or radiative lifetimes of the imp
lanted material.
