Ga. Morse et al., OUTREACH TO HOMELESS MENTALLY-ILL PEOPLE - CONCEPTUAL AND CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS, Community mental health journal, 32(3), 1996, pp. 261-274
This paper describes a model of outreach predicated on developing a tr
usting, meaningful relationship between the outreach worker and the ho
meless person with mental illness. We describe five common tasks inher
ent in this model of outreach (establishing contact and credibility, i
dentifying people with mental illness, engaging clients, conducting as
sessments and treatment planning, and providing ongoing service). Othe
r issues discussed include: (a) Responding to dependency needs and pro
moting autonomy; (b) setting limits while maintaining flexibility; (c)
resistance to mental health treatment and follow-up service options.
