This study examines the relationship between Level of Expressed Emotio
n (LEE) scale scores and rehospitalization in a sample of 188 psychiat
rically impaired persons who were discharged from a public psychiatric
hospital A Cox regression analysis revealed a significant relationshi
p between LEE scores and rehospitalization When a stepwise inclusion m
ethod for subscales was employed, however only one of the four LEE sub
scales (intrusiveness) was revealed as a significant predictor. The im
plications of the results for the conceptualization of interpersonal a
nd psychosocial factors affecting the community adjustment of people w
ith psychiatric impairment and the usefulness of the LEE as a possible
substitute for the more arduous Camberwell Family Interview are discu
ssed.
