The temporal evolution of a laser heated surface is measured via detec
tion of the black body radiation on a nanosecond timescale. The result
ing temperature transient is described well by a numerical solution of
the heat conduction equation. The method presented is a direct relati
vely inexpensive way of obtaining ultrafast non-contact temperature me
asurements.
