The differential cross section sigma(theta) for neutron elastic scatte
ring from C-12 and for inelastic scattering from the 4.44 MeV state wa
s measured at 15.57, 16.75 and 17.29 MeV. The sigma(theta) data, toget
her with published analysing power A(y)(theta) data, were analysed in
the framework of the spherical optical model and in the coupled-channe
ls formalism. It was concluded that the present C-12(n, n)C-12 data an
d published data at higher energies appear to be well suited for deter
mining properties of valence single-particle excitations in C-11 and C
-13 via an iterative-moment approach or a dispersive optical-model ana
lysis.
