The authors judge the adequacy of shortened forms of Wechsler's tests.
They take advantage of experience with the development of different s
hortened forms of WAIS-R from abroad. They suggest their own alternati
ve which consist of the administration of four subtests - Information,
Digit, Dice and Symbols. On the basis of statistic evaluation of WAIS
-R in 109 psychiatric patients, three equations for calculation of the
sum of weighted scores were formed, from which it is possible to obta
in the values for total, verbal and performance IQ by the help of tabl
e transformation. The correlations found (0.948, 0.919 and 0.977) poin
t at the sufficient accordance of the shortened form with the really a
ssessed sum of weighted scores. The standard errors of estimation (7.0
8, 5.19 and 4.08) are also on the level comparable with the results fr
om abroad. The authors recommend to use the shortened version of WAIS-
R under certain circumstances in psychiatric patients and in that case
s when the variance of the subtests is not significant. This shortened
form of WAIS-R can be used in all age stages. The authors mean that t
he accurateness of IQ estimation by the help of the shortened form wou
ld be even higher in normal population.
