A procedure for estimating biomass during batch fermentation from on-l
ine gas analysis is presented. First, the respiratory quotient was use
d to determine the fraction of the total oxygen utilization rate requi
red for cell maintenance and growth versus product synthesis. The modi
fied oxygen utilization rate was then used to estimate biomass on-line
by integrating the oxygen balance for cell synthesis-maintenance. The
method is illustrated for the case of L-lysine synthesis by Corynebac
terium glutamicum.
