Abstract
The (p,d) pickup reaction, leading to spin-singlet and spin-tripler c ontinuum final states of the np system, is treated within the adiabati c approximation. Calculations are carried out for the C-13(p,d) and C -13(p,d) reactions at 35 MeV, leading to the ground and 4.44 MeV state s of C-12, for which new data have recently been reported. The np rela tive energy dependence of the (p,d) cross sections and the contributi ons from triplet and singlet configurations are clarified. We show tha t, within the adiabatic model, theoretical expectations for the magnit ude of the singlet state cross section and of the relative magnitudes of the cross sections for the (p,d) and singlet and triplet (p,d) cha nnels are particularly transparent. The calculated adiabatic model cro ss sections differ by an order of magnitude from recently published ca lculations and data. We show that vector analyzing power data for the ground state transition could be very valuable in clarifying this disa greement.
