We investigate the consequences of the requirements of antisymmetrizat
ion upon the optical model description of alpha-particle scattering on
an open-shell target. As an illustrative example, we carry out a glob
al optical model analysis of C-14 elastic scattering data between 22 a
nd 54 MeV. We demonstrate the coexistence of a conventional optical po
tential with a ''hybrid,'' l-dependent potential which admits unphysic
al bound states whose quantum numbers agree with those of the forbidde
n states predicted by the resonating group method. We stress the role
of the discrete ambiguity in explaining this coexistence, and we inves
tigate the properties of a supersymmetric partner of the deep l-indepe
ndent potential which agrees with the resonating group prescription.
