Abstract
Interferon is currently the only approved medication in the United Sta tes for treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C infections. The mechani sm of action of interferon and guidelines for its administration are r eviewed. Important clinical studies involving its use in hepatitis B a nd C infections are discussed, and investigational therapies for chron ic viral hepatitis are highlighted.
