The need to capture design knowledge and transfer it to the developmen
t of design environments is described. Two sets of design studies are
presented in which data concerning the analogue circuit design process
are captured for use in the development of a semiautomated design env
ironment. Data derived from design activities in the first set of stud
ies are represented in a cognitive model. The second set of studies is
aimed at exploring in more detail the relationship between plans and
the circuit design process. Conclusions and recommendations for system
design are presented.
