Ultrasonic, piezoelectric and dielectric measurements on single crysta
ls of (-)-2-alpha-methylbenzylamino-5-nitropyridine (MBANP) are report
ed. Longitudinal and transverse velocity measurements in six crystal d
irections were used to calculate the 13 elastic constants. Dielectric
measurements were carried out in four directions and compared with ref
ractive index measurements carried out at optical frequencies. MBANP e
xhibited piezoelectric coefficients of similar magnitude to those foun
d in lithium niobate. These data are discussed in terms of the intermo
lecular interactions occurring in the crystal structure.
