Laser kinetic spectroscopy was used to determine the photophysical par
ameters (fluorescence and triplet-triplet (T-T) spectra, lifetimes of
the triplet and singlet states, bimolecular constant for oxygen quench
ing, fluorescence quantum yield acid quantum yield of formation of the
triplet state) of the water-soluble complexes of Ag(II), Cd(II), Co(I
I), Cu(II), Mg(II), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Zn(II) with the tetraso
dium salt of meso-tetrakis (4-sulphonatophenyl) porphyrin (H2TPPS4). T
he complexes of metals with d(0) and d(10) electron configurations (Cd
(II), Mg(II) and Zn(II)) are characterized by high tripler quantum yie
lds and strong fluorescence in the red spectral region and are thus mo
re efficient photosensitizers than the ligand alone.
