The salts dissolved in a single solvent or a mixed solvent are capable
of altering the vapour pressure and the relative volatilities, respec
tively. Theory and practice showed that the salt effect on the vapou-l
iquid equilibrium can be large in certain systems, providing a potenti
al technique of extractive distillation for systems difficult or impos
sible to separate by normal rectification. A survey of the literature
pertaining to salt effect in vapour-liquid equilibrium is reviewed.
