Optical properties change with strain produced by different stresses.
Undrawn Nylon 6 fibres from an Egyptian manufacturer have been measure
d dynamically by interferometry. Both two- and multiple-beam interfero
metric techniques were used to determine refractive indices and birefr
ingence of the investigated Nylon 6 samples with strain produced by di
fferent stresses. Using a micro-strain device attached to a microscope
stage and through the application of the appropriate mathematical equ
ations, the refractive indices and the birefringence values were deter
mined as a function of the draw ratios. The resulting data were utiliz
ed to calculate the polarizability per unit volume, Poisson's ratio, t
he strain optical coefficient and several other parameters and constan
ts. Relationships between the various optical parameters and the draw
ratios are plotted and the effect of draw ratio on the refractive inde
x profile is studied. Microinterferograms are given for illustration.
