Submonolayer deposition of a metal upon a well-characterized surface o
f the same metal can be used to study the properties of surface diffus
ion. Satellite diffraction peaks can be observed, whose shape is relat
ed to the island size and spacing distributions. Here we present resul
ts for Cu;Cu(110) for which the temperature and rate dependencies of t
he resulting distributions have been examined on beamline X16A at NSLS
. The results are interpreted in terms of rate-equation theories.
