Abstract
The adsorption of CO has been studied on a Ni monolayer on Cu(100). Th e change in the Ni surface electronic structure upon CO adsorption is manifested in a broadening and appearance of new states in the Ni 2p x -ray absorption spectra. From a comparison with inverse photoemission spectra these states can be described as Ni 3d-CO 2pi hybrids. The Ni -CO hybridization is also seen to perturb the multiplets in the 2p(5)3 d9 photoemission satellite.
