Cervical cancer remains an important health problem worldwide, despite
its decline in countries where organized screening programs are in pl
ace. The morbidity of treatment and mortality for advanced lesions are
high, a frustrating situation because the cervix is accessible and a
good screening test, the Pap smear, exists. Human papillomavirus infec
tion is an important risk factor, and a vaccine against this virus cou
ld be effective in eradicating this cancer. The cervix is a nearly per
fect organ for chemoprevention studies because of its accessibility; e
arly trials have been promising.
