Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is actually a spectrum of neop
lasms that include complete mole, partial mole, invasive hydatidiform
mole, choriocarcinoma, and placental site trophoblastic humor. These n
eoplasms account for less than one percent of all gynecologic neoplasm
s, and all develop in association with pregnancy. Therefore, screening
for them in the general population is not worthwhile. The oral contra
ceptive is a chemopreventive for women at risk for GTD.
