A mandible and first upper premolar discovered in North Chad by the Fr
anco-Chadian Paleoanthropological Project demonstrate for the first ti
me the presence of an australopithecine west of the Rift Valley. The C
had hominid presents a combination of primitive and derived characters
which distinguishes it from all other early hominid taxa and which su
ggests that this new species represents a clade independent since 4 Ma
or more.
