A novel method for the deblocking of the dithioacetals and oxathioacet
als is described. Periodic acid under nonaqueous conditions has been u
sed for the deprotection of the dithio- and oxathio-derivatives to the
corresponding carbonyl compounds. This simple high-yield transformati
on is conveniently carried out in nonaqueous medium and works well wit
h complex sensitive aldehydes arid in the presence of other protective
