Photo-sensitized oxygenation of phenethylguanidoxime led to the effect
ive production of an expected urea derivative along with generation of
nitric oxide (NO) or its equivalent. The formation of both products c
ould be reasonably explained by the mechanism based on singlet oxygen
ene reaction of olefins. This should give a possible chemical model fo
r the biological oxidation of N-omega-hydroxy-L-arginine into L-citrul
line and NO. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
