Abstract
It is shown theoretically that the quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes of a pr operly designed rib waveguide can have the same propagation constant. The conditions for achieving such mode degeneracy in typical rib waveg uides are presented and discussed. Rib waveguides with degenerate pola rised modes can potentially be used for forming polarisation-insensiti ve integrated optic devices.
