Abstract
We have reviewed the development of psychiatric intensive care, focusi ng on organizational factors and the causes of psychiatric violence, s uggesting guidelines for rapid tranquillization, The economics of runn ing a psychiatric intensive care unit were subjected to an analysis of fixed, semi-fixed and variable costs. Variable costs (treatment and p atient numbers) were shown to be more open to manipulation and possibl e cost savings.
