A laser induced photoacoustic spectroscopy (LIPAS) system has been stu
died to analyze penta-valent (NpO2+) neptunium under PUREX process con
dition. The detection limit absorptivity of Np(V) in nitric acid is fo
und to be 3.41x10(-5) cm(-1) which is two orders lower than that of co
nventional absorption spectrophotometry. The intensity of the photoaco
ustic signal is magnified in proportion to tile coexisting uranium con
centration. Signals of Np(V) ions in the presence of uranium agree wel
l with signals of Np(V) without uranium when multiplying by the specif
ic heat of the solutions containing uranium. The photoacoustic spectra
are measured by a double-cell system.
