Anxiety disorders include generalised anxiety disorders, panic disorde
rs and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Patients suffer chronic and per
sistent apprehension and tension not relating to any real danger and t
his causes physical symptoms which interfere with everyday activities.
Benzodiazepines were widely used but have a serious side-effect profi
le, so newer anxiolytic drugs are required. This review highlights the
patent activity, drugs in development and the leading pharmaceutical
companies in this area over the period 1990 through to 1995.
