Abstract
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the collective name given to more than twenty specialised healthcare research institutions in th e US, whose development and licensing activities are centralised in an Office of Technology Transfer (OTT). Since it operates as a Governmen t agency, the organisation differs in its patenting profile from the m ajor pharmaceutical companies included in this series. However, this p rofile has been included due to the high ranking R&D position currentl y held by the organisation. This article includes information on the m ost important collaborative projects between the NIH and various unive rsities and pharmaceutical companies, as well as highlighting the majo r areas of research and the most prolific inventors in terms of patent applications.
