Abstract
In the framework of the SERS theory, suggested by the author and based on the conception of so-called strong quadrupole interaction of radia tion with molecules, the SER cross-section of the methane molecule is considered. It is demonstrated that a major part of the scattering, ca used by the quadrupole moments and responsible for intense SERS, vanis hes due to some electrodynamical forbiddance. The theoretical result i s applied to the interpretation of the SER spectrum of the methane mol ecule and can explain slight enhancements of its bands.
