Abstract
The design theory presented describes characteristic features of thin diffractive elements. In particular it permits the derivation of upper bounds of the diffraction efficiency of diffractive elements. These b ounds are independent of the calculation method used to obtain the dif fractive elements. The consequences of the results for diffractive opt ics are briefly discussed.
