In the Motow bay, the Barents cod spawn when the Atlantic Ocean is int
o warm phase and Barents cod populations have a large number of adult
fish. When the big fish are foraging along south-east coast of the Mot
ow bay, and then prespawning fish migrate near the Murmansk shelf a li
kelihood of the successful spawn is highest. The first stage of spawn
development is prolonged by the low water temperatures because spawns
are staying for a long time away from the Murmansk shelf. As a result,
many spawns are dead before the larva's stage, and very few larvae de
velop at pelagic or bottom forms. Sub adult fish also has a little cha
nce to survive because they are not in time to adapt itself to cold se
ason. By these means, slow development spawn on the first stage delay
the next ontogenetic stages, and get a little chance for surviving of
young cod that was born in the Motow bay.
