Abstract
Older men had a significantly higher incidence of new atherothrombotic brain infarction than did older women, Risk factors for new atherothr ombotic brain infarction were prior atherothrombotic brain infarction, systemic hypertension, and diabetes mellitus in older men and women, and cigarette smoking, serum total cholesterol, and serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (inverse association) in older women.
