Abstract
Information technology has provoked major changes in the library and i nformation world. The library schools are responding to these changes, but the future remains far from clear. Two scenarios, one pessimistic and one optimistic, are presented. The symbiotic relationship of the educators and the practitioners is emphasized; both must react positiv ely to technological developments and seize the new opportunities if t he optimistic scenario is to have a chance of success.
