The following paper examines the current confusion in librarianship be
tween library management and information resource management. Three qu
estions are discussed: (1) What are the links and overlaps between lib
rary management and information resource management (IRM)? (2) Has rec
ent emphasis on IRM changed the nature of library management? (3) Why
does library management remain a central issue for the future of libra
ries? The paper begins with a brief history of library management and
IRM and moves on to definitions of terms. It then addresses the import
ance of an organizational perspective for the management of libraries
as well as the management of their information resources to attain the
ir own organizational goals.
