Abstract
The long range van der Waals interaction between a neutral atom and a surface induces spatial anisotropy (birefringence) in an atomic vapor near the surface. We report on theoretical estimates of this anisotrop y due to the surface and on its experimental probing through the techn ique of selective reflection.
