An improved time resolved interferometer was used to characterize the
nonlinear response in amplitude for various inorganics glasses. Thus,
absolute values of nonlinear (and linear) indexes have been measured.
They are in good agreement with theoritical results deduced from an in
dependent structural model. The adopted copropagating configuration al
so leads to direct measurement of the phase of the nonlinear response.
Discussing these results opens the possibility of a real band-gap eng
eenering.
