Solute-solute interactions, due to self-association as well as mixed a
ssociation, are shown to arise for the steroids cortisone, tetrahydroc
ortisol, tetrahydrocortisone, and methylprednisolone. From molecular m
echanics and dynamics simulations, these interactions appear to be dri
ven by strong electrostatic and hydrogen bonding forces. These interac
tions have a significant effect on solute retention and dispersion beh
avior under routine operating conditions in reverse-phase liquid chrom
atography.
