Abstract
The aim of the research currently being undertaken at UMIST, for the U K's Health and Safety Executive, is to evaluate the effectiveness of a behavioural approach in improving safety on construction sites. The P roportional Rating Scale (PRS) currently under development at UMIST is compared with the more traditional approach of the All Or Nothing (AO N) measure for safety performance. The results have shown a 35 % diffe rence between them (t = 25.99 ; df = 29 ; p < .001) in safety performa nce levels on the same site. This has implications for introducing mot ivational strategies, such as goal-setting.
