Many multinational companies have adopted a competence based approach
to solving organisational problems. When reviewing its management trai
ning, the British Employment Service conducted a postal survey of over
1 000 managers using a competences checklist based on the National Co
uncil for Vocational Qualifications/Employment Department competences
framework for managers (produced for the government's Management Chart
er Initiative). The survey is described, as is subsequent work applyin
g the competences checklist/framework approach. Potential strengths an
d weaknesses of this approach to job analysis are discussed.
