Abstract
We calculate potential energies for charged and neutral jellium cluste rs which fragment in two pieces, in the framework of the liquid drop m odel plus Strutinsky shell corrections obtained from the two-centre ha rmonic oscillator. We consider the symmetric fragmentation of Na-42(+), Na-18(++), and Na-38. Good agreement is found with results obtained by self-consistent methods, which are much more involved.
