Increased outputs from rotary cement kilns and changed methods of burn
ing represent a challenge to the refractories industry. The optimum av
ailability of a rotary kiln plant is crucially dependent on the life o
f the basic refractory brickwork, and increasing use is being made of
chrome-free basic bricks, so the development Of improved, chrome-free
magnesia bricks is now assuming great importance. Disposal problems wh
en using bricks containing chrome ore are also making the use of chrom
e-free types a matter of priority [1]. Since the start of the 80s chro
me-free basic bricks have been used increasingly in rotary cement kiln
s. The report will describe the experience obtained with various types
of brick, and reference will also be made to their continued developm
ent and possible future applications.
