Abstract
The purpose of this study is to show the effectiveness of control stra tegies among the passive tuned mass damper system, active tuned mass d amper (ATMD) system, base-isolation system and hybrid control system. A systematic way to determine the weighting matrix Q in the control sy stem is proposed. The weighting matrix Q used in the ATMD system is de termined by estimating the gain of modal control through the pole assi gnment method. For the hybrid control system discussion on the weighti ng matrix Q is also presented. Numerical studies using different contr ol strategies on two buildings (one is a stiff structure and the other is a soft structure) are discussed. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited
