Hydrolysis of diphenyltin dichloride in the presence of diethyl ether
proceeds via formation of an ionic, monomeric diorganodistannoxane com
pound. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of (C4H6N3)(2)[SnPh(
2)OCl](2) is reported, together with IR data. The dimer consists of fi
ve coordinate tin(IV) units with di-mu-oxo bridging. The coordination
geometry of the tin unit is a distorted trigonal bipyramid with two ph
enyl groups and one mu-oxo in equatorial positions, and the other two
mu-oxo and chlorine atoms in axial positions.
