Nine cases of alveolar hemorrhage seen over a two-year period in an in
ternal medicine department are reported. Clinical manifestations were
highly variable, and only two patients presented with the classical tr
iad of anemia, hemoptysis, and roentgenographic infiltrates, The diagn
osis was confirmed by demonstration of hemosiderin-laden macrophages i
n bronchoalveolar lavage fluid specimens. The cause was pneumorenal sy
ndrome in four cases, Wegener's granulomatosis in two, and heart disea
se with pulmonary artery hypertension in three.
